DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POPULATION DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN THE REPUBLIC OF SRPSKA

Abstract

The subject of the research are demographic characteristics and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mortality and health condition of the population of the Republic of Srpska. The aim of this research is to define the terms needed to understand demographic processes, and to investigate the implications of COVID-19. The empirical research has obtained quantitative and qualitative indices of demographic indicators, especially due to the influence of COVID-19. Republic of Srpska as a whole belongs to the type D, with weak demographic resources and characteristics, and with significant demographic disparities in the spatial development. In 2020, the population of Republic of Srpska was estimated at 1,136,274 inhabitants, with a deepening negative rate of natural growth (-6.53%0),reduced vital index (0.63), while the most expressed disease of the cardio-vascular system remains the cause of population deaths. with increased mortality in 2020 (16,582 and 14.59%0, respectively). ''excess mortality' in 2020 of 2.725 inhabitants, as a result of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the beginning of 2020, and 4.306. Republic of Srpska, as well as BiH as a whole, ranks among the countries with the most unfavourable indicators of the impact of COVID-19 on the mortality among European countries.
