Abstract

Although one of the main features of the digital economy is dematerialization, strengthening the service sector and creating functional goods through less and less usage of material resources, the need for energy of modern man is not decreasing. We are witnessing climate change, which is manifested by an increaseasing of the global average temperature, melting polar ice, rising sea levels and increasing and more powerfuland frequent weather disasters. The gap between rich and poor countries is an additional aggravating circumstance in solving the environmental problems that the digital economy has to face. The subject of this paper is the analysis of greenhouse gas emissions in the digital economy as well as the application of digital technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of this paper is to provide an answer to the research question whether in national economies with a higher degree of performance of the digital economy there is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
