Abstract

The aim of the work is to analyze international sanctions. There is no consensus around the concept of sanctions, in the context discussed in this paper. International sanctions are non-violent actions that individual countries take against other countries in order to force them to change certain aspects of foreign and domestic policy that are considered unacceptable. Depending on whether they are introduced by one country or an international organization, they are divided into unilateral and multilateral. Sanctions are usually divided into three forms: diplomatic (restriction or complete termination of diplomatic relations between countries, e.g. withdrawal of ambassadors), economic (usually related to the prohibition of trade, usually related to weapons, sometimes with certain exceptions), and military (various types of military intervention). The aim of the paper is to analyze current economic multilateral sanctions with a focus on sanctions against the Russian Federation. The paper used descriptive and comparative methods, as well as scientific articles, announcements by regulators, websites of relevant institutions, books, and the like. The subject of the paper is the analysis of international sanctions, with a special focus on economic multilateral sanctions directed at the Russian Federation. The problem of the work is the lack of consensus around the concept of sanctions in the context of this work, as well as the existing misconceptions among experts and the general public that refer to sanctions. The research question of the paper is: "How do the economic multilateral sanctions on Russia work and how do they affect it and how effective are they in achieving the desired goals?" The paper indicates that there are certain misconceptions among experts and the general public regarding sanctions. The conclusion shows that the sanctions affect Russia to a great extent. The effect is different depending on the observed parts of the population and certain sectors of the economy, but the most affected sectors are those related to the export and import of goods. For example, sanctions have led to a decrease in oil and gas exports from Russia. The extent of that influence is still not entirely clear, partly because of the conscious concealment of certain indicators and the absence of a real democratic dialog, and partly because the full impact will only be seen in the near future.
