Restructuring of Railways of the Republic of Srpska a.d. Doboj (hereinafter RRS) represents current topic, which has attracted, and is still attracting attention of all involved, whose interests are directly or indirectly affected. Nevertheless, in this process, two parties have mostly been affected: the Government of the Republic of Srpska, as the majority owner of this public company, and the employees who have spent their working life in this company. If we observe business activities of RRS years back, we see a picture characterized by: big losses which overgrew share capital, big expenses of business activities, unused capacity of transport in relation to its scope, outdated mobile and infrastructural capacities, unfavourable qualification-age structure of employees, and inadequate organizational structure which became an obstruction for better business activities of the company. Unsustainability of such conditions forced the management of this company to move towards its restructuring. Restructuring of RRS should be based on the guidelines of Directive 91/440/EEZ about the development of the railways of the Community. The key guideline of this Directive refers to the separation of infrastructure management, which should stay the property of the Government of the Republic of Srpska, and the transport management. Key goals of the forthcoming restructuring are: increasing the level of efficiency of doing business, financial recovery from the accumulated debt, rationalization of expenses, and establishing functional organization. The goal of this paper is to present the restructuring of RRS as the only way leading to recovery and stabilization of this public company.
